In every conflict, censorship, propaganda, misinformation but also disinformation occupy the field. Unsurprisingly, since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, disinformation campaigns have multiplied. And if the Internet, digital platforms and social networks facilitate more than ever the dissemination of false information, “fake news” and other “intoxicants”, they remain a valuable source of information, which reflects the reality of current events. On the condition that you know how to choose your sources, and diversify them.
WHERE CAN YOU FIND RELIABLE INFORMATION?
News agencies allow you to follow the news in real-time with reporters on the ground. Agence France Presse (AFP) is very present on social networks, especially Twitter. In English, Reuters (United Kingdom) and Associated Press (United States) are the best known news agencies.
Other reliable TV channels
Note that if these headlines don’t mention a news story you read on a doubtful news site, then there is a strong chance that the news story in question is simply false news.
Other news sites have a fact-checking service and are part of the International Fact-checking Network Signatories with a section that separates the true from the false. In French, you can follow Stop l’infox of France24, Vrai ou fake of Francetv and Arte, Fake Off of 20 Minutes, CheckNews of Libération and AFP Factuel (AFP Fact Check in English on Twitter). France Info’s Révélateurs team analyzes videos to locate them precisely. Le Monde also offers Décodex, an online tool to check the information circulating on the Internet and find rumors. Simply enter the URL of a Web page to find out if the source of the information is reliable or not.
If you come across any information, photo or video that has not been confirmed or denied by fact-checking services, you can contact them directly by email, Whatsapp or on social networks.
It is also possible to check by yourself: the Twitter account OSINT Coupsure, which uses satellite images to locate attacks filmed in Ukraine, has for example compiled a list of tools used. And plug-ins such as WeVerify (for the Chrome browser) or its older version InVID (for Firefox) can find out if a photo or video is authentic and if it has already been published elsewhere.
